The Little Ship's
Best Friend, Teacher, and Sailor

The Little Ship – Southern Cross

Southern Cross is the namesake of the constellation Crux (Southern Cross), which has been historically used for navigation in the Southern Hemisphere, much like the North Star in the northern hemisphere. Southern Cross was named before her maiden voyage, a 2017 challenging and exciting exploration down the Strait of Magellan into and through Tierra del Fuego, Chile. While she may only be 11' 11" in length she is strong, seaworthy and continuing around the world.

Small Craft Advisor Magazine and SCAMP

This little ship is a SCAMP design by John Welsford and was built from a kit from Small Craft Advisor magazine. Howard is a writer for Small Craft Advisor and found the design to be a perfect match for his desire to sail where the wind blows hard. The Little Ship is made of wood and is one of hundreds of similar yet very different SCAMP sailboats. A quick search on the internet for "Small Craft Advisor magazine or SCAMP sailboat will provide great information about the boat and the fun of building and sailing.

The voyage in Chile was followed by elementary public and home school students. These students and their teachers participated in educational activities via interactive live streaming. It was a grand success, and now the little ship will continue to voyage around the globe, connecting thousands of school kids world wide in a rich and compelling educational opportunity. Anchors aweigh!

To date the VOYSC project has proven to be an engaging and information rich educational opportunity for elementary school students. We are being followed by teachers, students, sailors, adventurers, general viewers, and supporters. Students and their teachers followed Howard and his Little Ship during his voyage through Tierra del Fuego and are continuing to follow along with the current and future adventures as the voyage continues to unfold.

By following along using this site teachers and students will have access to the adventures of the voyage via live "Map Share" tracking ( our position updates every ten minutes) of the voyage. Utilizing scheduled computer, tablet or cell phone live-stream interactive elementary school classrooms can engage in lve stream broadcasts, a blog, posted updates, seamanship video archives, the voyage story in live and archived video chapters, and more.

Teachers, the educational aspect of the voyage is a program meant for you and your students. It offers a unique, relatable, exciting, global perspective, content based experiential education program. The teaching aspect of the program is geared to elementary school students and is designed for ease of use. We are doing this because we are also teachers! We feel strongly that if we can do something positive, however small, we can make the future a little better. Education is our best hope.
